The MERV, MPR, FPR translation table
Different filter manufacturers use different rating scales. Here's the translation:
- MERV 8 = 3M MPR 600-700 = Home Depot FPR 5 — blocks lint, dust, some pollen. Almost no wildfire-smoke particles blocked. Standard residential HVAC baseline.
- MERV 11 = 3M MPR 1000-1200 = FPR 7 — blocks pollen and mold spores. Some large smoke particles blocked.
- MERV 13 = 3M MPR 1500-1900 = FPR 10 — blocks most bacteria and smaller smoke particles. First tier that meaningfully reduces PM2.5 smoke.
- MERV 16 = 3M MPR 2200-2800 = FPR 12+ — blocks nearly all PM2.5 smoke particles. Rarely usable in standard residential HVAC due to airflow restriction.
- HEPA (MERV 17+) = requires purpose-built filtration housing — cannot drop into a standard residential furnace slot without airflow reengineering.
Why MERV 13 is the practical residential ceiling
Standard residential HVAC systems have a fixed blower motor and duct cross-section. Every step up the MERV scale increases pressure drop across the filter, forcing the blower to work harder. Above MERV 13, most residential systems either can't move enough air (comfort dropoff) or overheat the motor (component failure). MERV 13 is the highest rating that reliably works in a standard residential system.
How to actually get above MERV 13 without replacing HVAC
Two options:
- Standalone whole-home HEPA scrubber — a dedicated air purifier plumbed into the return duct with its own blower. Adds MERV 17+ filtration without adding pressure drop to the primary HVAC system. Cost: $1,200-$3,500 installed for a whole-home unit (IQAir, RabbitAir Whole-Home, ClearAsleepAir).
- Portable HEPA units — room-scale air purifiers that operate independently of HVAC. Best for one-room or sleeping-quarters filtration during major smoke events. Cost: $200-$700 per unit (Coway AirMega, Levoit Core 400S, IQAir HealthPro).
Recirculate vs fresh air during smoke events
During a wildfire smoke event, close all fresh-air intake dampers on your HVAC system and set the system to recirculate. This keeps outdoor smoke from being pulled into the home; the MERV 13+ filter then cleans the recirculating indoor air. If your HVAC has an economizer or ERV (energy recovery ventilator), it should have a "smoke mode" or similar bypass — check the manual.
What to do the day the fire starts
- Switch HVAC to recirculate; close all windows and doors.
- Start any standalone HEPA scrubbers and portable HEPA units.
- Verify MERV 13+ filter is installed and clean (not clogged from prior smoke exposure).
- If smoke is heavy and MERV 13 isn't keeping indoor PM2.5 under 35 μg/m³, move to a single room with a portable HEPA unit at max setting.
- Replace HVAC filter within 30 days after smoke event — filters loaded with PM2.5 lose efficiency and can re-emit particles.

Do I need a standalone HEPA scrubber or is MERV 13 enough?
For typical wildfire smoke events, MERV 13 with HVAC in recirculate mode is usually enough. For prolonged severe events (multiple days of AQI 200+), or if any household member has respiratory conditions, a standalone HEPA scrubber ($1,200-$3,500 installed) or portable HEPA units ($200-$700) provide meaningful additional protection.
What's the difference between MPR, FPR, and MERV?
They're three different marketing scales for the same underlying filter performance. 3M uses MPR, Home Depot uses FPR, industry standard is MERV. MERV 13 ≈ MPR 1500-1900 ≈ FPR 10. When shopping, translate to MERV and pick MERV 13 minimum for wildfire smoke.
